Please educate me?
Want us to go around shooting people defending the coast like a USA coastguard?
Not all coastguards are like that.
Also there is no more law or navy, so I don't see the point of checking for smugglers.

We are modeled after European coastguards like the British or Dutch royal coast guards, who mostly do search, rescue, salvage & waterway maintenance.

Things I write on third-party discord servers are not canon.
I need us to be prepared and a well-oiled machine in the desolation reality.

If factions could get their own board, I could separate the handbooks from the story thread, and even post internal documents for members only to a hidden subsection.

Fire Fighting at Sea

Fire Fighting at Sea

A fire requires oxygen, heat & fuel to burn. Limit one of these factors to extinguish it.
An explosion requires oxygen, dispersion, confinement, heat & combustible dust to go off.
Image

Fire fighting is usually focused on preventing oxygen near the fire, and not on the fuel or heat.

Halon fire suppression system
Deadly to humans, only employ in unmanned areas.
Works by filling the room with Halon, extinguishing fires and humans alike due to lack of oxygen.

CO2 fire supression
It may look like the fire has extinguished, but if you cease the CO2 flow too soon, the fire can reignite when oxygen meets the fuel which is still at the combustion temperature

Powerder supression
Powders usually are finer as Sahara sand and will contaminate every nook and cranny, wreaking havoc on electronics
Chemical powders usually wreak havoc on electronics.
Same as with CO2 ceasing too soon can cause the fire to reignite.

Water fire supression
Water is effective by lowering the temperature and preventing direct contact between oxygen and fuel.

General
  • Sound alarm
  • Activate water intake pump
  • Activate sprinklers
  • Close all hatches and doorways to prevent spread and fueling the fire with oxygen
Fire response team
  • Check overpressure breathing apparatus
  • Stay in pairs
  • Before opening or touching a door, spray it with water to test the temperature
  • Always shelter crouched behind a door when opening it, in case of flashback or backdraft
  • Stay low when extinguishing to prevent warming by steam clouds (Prevent overheating as long as possible, leave before you feel a stroke coming on)
  • Leave before breathing tank levels are below 50%

The Dolphin Lady

The Dolphin Lady

A call comes in on emergency frequency 16 about a drowning body.
The situation turns out to be in between two dams.

Image

Lieutenant Radcliffe stays with the rescue vessel and keeps a watchful eye on the pirate in the tower overlooking the bridge.
Admiral Mallard climbs over the rocky dam and swims to Dante's rescue.

Image

Dante's head is still at about water level while he coughs up water.
Mallard wishes to slide him up just a few inches, to free his head and shoulders from the water, and raise his head slightly.

Image

Now his head is out of the water, it would indeed be a good time to help him empty his lungs.
It seems he did not breathe in a lot of water as he comes to on his own.

Image

Image

Lieutenant Radcliffe is perplexed to see Admiral Mallard return without the drowned body.

Image

Time to celebrate, get drunk, and tell tall tales of the sea.

Torques and Forces
Pivoting pointThe point the vessel turns around
Buoyancy pointTheoretical median of upward force against hull
Sail pointTheoretical median of wind force against superstructure
Propulsion pointTheoritical median of the vessel's propelling capabilities
Weight pointTheoretical median of the vessels mass (Where you can attach a string and suspend it perfectly balanced)
Drag pointTheoretical median of factors slowing the vessel's momentum

Kenting coupleArm between buoyancy and weight point
Pivot coupleArm between pivoting point and rudder
Propulsion coupleArm between propulsion and drag point

Momentum = inertia + bouyancy + kenting + pivot + propultion + drag + sail + drift

Image

When the sail point passes the buoyancy point, the ship will capsize.
Fig 1. Ship will upright itselfFig 2. List beyond the point of no return, ship will not upright itself, but capsize
