Coast Guard

Whether we talk about bandits, soldiers or the most dedicated fathers, all of them have one thing in common. They can't survive alone.

Collision Prevention Priorities

Nautic priority rules are to be applied in order, the top rule applies first.
  • Good seamanshipPrevent collisions at all cost & always render assistance
  • Small makes way for largeLarge vessels are longer than 20 meters in length, or engaged in commercial activity, or have 12 passengers or more
  • Secondaty fairway makes way for primary fairwayAny vessel coming from outside a fairway, or a fairway with less priority shall make way
  • Downstream makes way for upstreamThe vessel downstream of an obstacle shall wait for a vessel upstream of the obstacle to pass
  • Overtaker makes wayThe overtaking ship shall make way, but the ship being overtaken shall give room
  • Starboard shoreA vessel traveling along the starboard shore or starboard edge of a fairway has priority over other vessels
  • Motor makes way for muscle, makes way for sailA mechanically propelled vessel shall make way for a vessel propelled by muscle, which in turn shall make way for a vessel propelled by wind
Note: A vessel is any floating object capable of navigation.
Therefore an anchored or beached ship need not make way.
An anchored ship does need to show proper signaling indicating it is anchored.

Priorities between vessels of similar propultion

Motor vessels
  • Starboard priorityThe vessel coming from the port side makes way for the vessel coming from starboard
  • Opposing starboardOpporsing courses both deviate to starboard
Sailing vessels
  • Starboard makes way for portA ship fairing its boom over starboard shall make way for a ship with its boom over the port side
  • Luff makes way for leeA ship luff of another shall make way for the ship lee of the other

Note: Unwritten rule - Wood makes way for plastic, which makes way for steel

HeadingThe direction the nose of the vessel is pointing
TrackThe direction of travel in relation to land
BearingDirection to a target
True NorthBased on the axis of the earth's rotation
Magnetic NorthBased on the axis of the earth's magnetic field
VariationVariation from the magnetic North due to curves in the magnetic field
DeviationDeviation from the magnetic North due to the magnetic properties of the vessel and its direct surroundings

Wind/wave oriented
LuffAny up-wind area
LeeAny down-wind area
In the wind/wavesHeading in opposite direction to the wind/waves
On the wind/wavesHeading at a 45-degree angle to the wind/waves
Half wind/wavesHeading at a 90-degree angle to the wind/waves
Broad wind/wavesHeading at a 135-degree angle to the wind/waves
With the wind/wavesHeading in equal direction to the wind/waves
Note: Wind direction is reported as where it blows from not where it blows to, i.e. the high-pressure area.
Note: Depending on the current the waves do not always roll in the same direction as the wind.

Electrical
  • Toggle main power lever
  • Stand-by on VHF channel
  • Power navigation instruments
  • Verify instrument read-outs
  • Power navigation lighting

Crude oil
Sea fairing vessels equipped for long distances often run directly on crude oil.
  • Start electrical power generator
  • Start air compressor
  • Start water intake pump
  • Compressed air engine start
  • Stop air compressor
  • Run stationary on diesel warming the engine
  • 5 Miles out at sea: Switch over to crude oil

General
  • Raise teh flag
  • Check the weather conditions
  • Wear & check rescue equipment
  • Check safety equipment
  • Check fuel & oil level
  • Open fuel tank vent
  • Open fuel valve
  • Close sanitation valve
  • Secure free-moving objects
  • Wear dead-man cord
  • Start engine
  • Register journey plan in the log and with the local radio authority
  • Confirm wind & current direction
  • Wait for engine oil & temp alarms to halt
  • Check for traffic

Fuel Resupply

Violet has been trying to contact the JTF for a while now, trying to set up a Liaison.

Image

Hoping to create some goodwill, the coast guard decided to run a fuel resupply mission.

Image

The truck enters the North gates of Scarville

Image

Image

Image

Image

Unexpectedly the North gates are suddenly locked.

Image

The JTF triest to claim the gate has been locked for a while now, and that signs were posted.
Why they need to feel the need to lie is unclear, no signs were posted on the gates and a few moments ago they were operational.

This is just like when they locked down the whole town without prior notice. Risking the survival of people who have become accustomed to store their personal supplies there. Or those trapped inside reliant on scavenging for food on the outside.
The JTF representative also speaks about a public notice board, but then can't answer where to find it in town.

Log Keeping
Logs should not only reflect what has happened but your plans intentions and motivations.
Facilitating Salvage, Search & Rescue operations; a found log with current observations and future intent is extremely valuable.

Ship log

Initial
  • Report weather forecast
  • Report origin
  • Report journey plan
  • Report cargo
  • Report crew
  • Report total number of souls on board
  • Fleet designation & size

Update
  • Report position
  • Report weather conditions
  • Report speed
  • Report course, track & heading
  • Fleet positions
  • Report observations

Final
  • Destination
  • Report cargo
  • Report crew
  • Report any irregularities indicating maintenance is required

Personal log
When not using a ship log, use a personal log.
When using a ship log maintain the personal log for overarching matters, and note when switching to which ship log.

Suggested minimal requirements
  • Personal vitality
  • Supplies and nourishment
  • Mission
  • Goals
  • Observations
Archiving
Transfer logs up the chain to group-, fleet- & central- command.
This ensures minimal loss of information for MIA vessels and personnel.
As well as ensuring captured logs are brief and not completely contextual, limiting the possibilities for nefarious intent.
